Help Change the Life of Young People in The Philippines
|
Meet Mirna:
Mirna (in the wheelchair) lives in a small, impoverished
village in the Philippines. Over the past few years
she has spent much time and effort to help raise up the
young people of her neighborhood and give them an
opportunity to create a better life for themselves and
their families.
In this effort she has used her own money to purchase a
house and land where she nurtures these young people.
They have created a vegetable garden which helps to feed
them and their families. Lack of education traps many girls into early marriage which usually results in early
motherhood, divorce and eventually single motherhood. By the time they are twenty they are already mothers
of three or four children. Their husbands often lack education and the ability to support the family, which leads
to extreme frustration. Divorce is inevitable. Families try to send the oldest son to high school in order for him
to be able to support his present and future families. The other children do not get that opportunity because
there just is not enough money. Teenage boys, unable to go to school, often linger on the streets and end up
in a life of crime. Completing high school helps these boys and girls break the cycle of poverty.
How can you help?
Last year (2008), Mirna was able to sponsor 8 student to finish high school. She is seeking like-minded
individuals who can help to sponsor these kids. One high school year costs $200 per child which includes
tuition, school supplies and school lunch. Any size donation is welcome. However, if you decide to sponsor a
child for one year, you will receive the name and address of that boy or girl, and you will be able to freely
communicate with them and their family. The new school year starts in June and we a trying to get as many kids
as possible to get into the new class. Please note that because Mirna is doing this project using her own funds,
she does not have the resources to pay for the process of establishing a charitable organization. Therefore,
any donation you may send, is not tax deductible. Please contact us to get more information.
